NICOLA CONTE @THE JAZZ CAFE (FRI/SAT.17TH/18TH AUGUST) at 23:56:24 Wednesday August 15 2007
NICOLA CONTE + The Root Source Live at the Jazz Cafe Friday 17th & Saturday 18th August doors open, 7pm £17.50 (Fri) £20 (Sat) Nicola Conte, the main man of Italian new wave Jazz Bossa Nova, returns to the Jazz Cafe for two exclusive shows with the backing of a full live band. Italian DJ/producer Nicola Conte's loungey brand of acid jazz relies extensively on bossa nova, but is also heavily influenced by the swinging soundtracks of Italian films in the '60s and '70s, plus touches of ethnic music and easy listening kitsch, reminiscent of Japan's Pizzicato Five. Part of the loose-knit Fez collective of artsy acid jazz revivalists centered in the Italian town of Bari, Conte was a classically trained musician who instead moved into production and DJing, working with artists like the Paolo Achenza Trio, the Fez Combo, Balanco, Quintetto X, and the Intensive Jazz Sextet. Conte also masterminded the Schema label, which gave many of those artists a home and cultivated a trademark, distinctly Italian approach to acid jazz. As for his own recording career, Conte scored an underground hit with his first single, Bossa Per Due, which appeared on a variety of compilations and was licensed in the U.S. for an Acura commercial. Conte's first album to be released in America was also titled Bossa Per Due, a slightly reconfigured version of the Italian Jet Sounds it appeared on Thievery Corporation's ESL (Eighteenth Street Lounge) label in the summer of 2001. The remix album Jet Sounds Revisited followed in late 2002. Conte's latest album, Other Directions, is out now and I'll be playing a track from it on my latest show due to air Sat Aug 4th at 3pm US EST. The Jazz Cafe is situated at 5, Parkway, Camden Town London NW1 7PG Opening Times Monday - Sunday: 7pm - 2am

Ur not wrong Bernadette They are descibed as an Indie pop rock band!! which is why when they pleaded with Marcus to play there CD we told them it would be too damaging to their confidence to be stomped to an inch of their lives on the night they signed their 1st record deal. They are a project of Veronicas who runs the place so we couldn't really say no! I think the stage will be ours to play off of in future having spoken to the night manager Charlie. Should have your T-shirt for you on the boat!!

SOUL UNDERGROUND-SATURDAY 18TH AUGUST Just wanted to let everyone know that the third Soul Underground Party takes place next Saturday the 18th of August at the fabulous Red Bar and Lounge . The Launch Party was amazing with some wonderful music showcasedby all the DJ's who showed Birmingham what its been missing out on for a very long time . The last one was possibly even better with not just the wonderful musical diversity that Soul Underground has been renowned for over the years but added to that we saw a little bit of the wonderful and unique vibe reminiscent of days gone by at The Wharf, with the most vibrant up for it crowd of music loving people and the inclusion once again of our fabulous percussionist Glenn Worthington. The new people who came along absolutely loved it ,many have them have been in touch , given great feedback , asked for more flyers and are bringing their friends to see what its all about ..some of the regulars who weren't able to attend because of the serious floods have been in touch to say they can't wait to come back so all in all this third event looks to be seriously good

Stretch Taylor-Blues&Soul Magazine in North London at 10:53:45 Saturday August 11 2007
Hi everybody, I just wanted to clarify things before any dreaded rumours start. Im in as much shock as anyone else with the news especially as I was just back from honeymoon yesterday, and after spinnin tunes at the 1000th issue party just 3 weeks ago! Its an unfortunate situation that the magazine finds itself in, especially after 40 years and on its 1000th issue. However, i must stress that the magazine is only on hold temporarily and it is not envisaged that this is the end for the magazine at all. It was on the cards for the last few weeks to be honest because quite simply, the new publisher who took over the magazine following the death of Roy Daniell was not a soul man, the music did not run through his veins and heart, and he did not put his money where his mouth is. So, we sincerely hope that by the end of September to have a new publisher in place, with 'real' finance and not an empty bank balance, to put the magazine back where it belongs in its rightful position as the worlds number one black music magazine. We would be grateful that when the magazine does hit the streets again, that you do go out and buy it to support us. In the meantime you should find the next issue will be published online at www.bluesandsoul.com very shortly. Hope you all have a wicked weekend, keep it soulful and many thanks for your support over the years. Respex. STRETCH TAYLOR - Editorial contributor - Blues&Soul Magazine

SOUL UNDERGROUND-SATURDAY 18TH AUGUST at 22:15:52 Friday August 10 2007
Just wanted to let everyone know that the third Soul Underground Party takes place next Saturday the 18th of August at the fabulous Red Bar and Lounge .

Just a quick reminder to let you all know that Filthy Soul is TONIGHT @ Filthy McNastys 68 Amwell St. EC1 All the usual 60's & 70's Modern & Crossover rarities alongside those tried and tested classics with your Residents: Nelly, Andy 'Big Alien, Marcus Bell,& Guest Northern Mick covering for Wayne. CoCo The Clown in Bournville at 16:6:5 Friday August 10 2007
If you want details of our exciting new event being organised, just hang about outside any club, pub, wine bar or public toilet and either me or some unknown DJ will get to you eventually with one of our historic flyers and you can give us your money there and then! If not we will post ourselves on as many web sites as possible so you will find us somehow. We still have places for DJs and all their mates, so if you bring 20 punters with you,you can collect their money, and then you can take a small remuneration for yourself(£10?)and then you're on the official bill (even if you'ved never done it before)....its as simple as that! We might even do a weekend in sunny Bournville where chocolate grows on trees and there are more people than Yarmouth. We will have seven tents all playing different music to Caister and our DJs (all 98 of them) know how to sing proper like! PS we wont bust you for drugs!

AS we have not had much fun for a while I thought I would let you in on the event you have all been waiting for... Dieppe Soul..... Five and a half days in a luxury 0 star B&B in sunny Dieppe. I know that last year everyone got stuck up a mountain in a half finished hovel in Clouretts Del Fart but this year it will be different. Trust me cos I fix cars for a living. This time I have two hundred and seven DJs (well sort of DJs as they have records) appearing so we will be busy even if no punters turn up. All you have to do is swim the channel by yourself then walk to the hotel behind the fish canning factory. I promise you a time you will never forget. PLUS we wont arrest anyone with a couple of drugs in their handbags cos we like to look after our guests. We are organising special trips to the fish market and, if its not too far, to the beach as well. I promise to make five and a half days seem like years! And years!

NICOLA CONTE @THE JAZZ CAFE (FRI/SAT.17TH/18TH AUGUST) at 10:30:33 Friday August 10 2007

So long BLUES AND SOUL Magazines are hard to run even in the good times. There will be alternatives but you will never be replaced. There is no soul industry anymore and no one buys records. Most club nights struggle to stay in the black. It is a sign of the times unfortunately. However lets always remember the huge contribution made by Blues and Soul and the terrific standards it set. Thanks for the memories Bob K/Jamie and respect to the other legends (GODIN /ABBEY /Natnan Etc)

Bob Masters at 16:2:6 Wednesday August 8 2007
It's very sad news about B&S, I worked there for a few years and started of the advertising department. It used to have huge clout with the record industry and was a great place to start if you wanted to get a foot in the door. Jeff Young started there, as did Pete Tong and Mernyn Antony(Lyn) now head of Marketing for Sony/BMG and Mark Webster. It was also the most disgusting place to work, they never, and I mean NEVER washed their tea-cup's. They would boast how many years it was since they washed them and even sack people for even suggesting it. The place was a real giggle though and you never knew who was going to pop in. We this thing called the "Mobile of Doom" hanging from the ceiling that we would stick pictures to of people that we didn't like or that drove us mad to bring them bad luck, like when Graham Gold made a house record and did the review himself for the mag and gave it 10/10, that kind of thing, but we stopped because it got to scary as the last time we did it was with pictures of Steve Walsh. B&S had to move with the ever changing tide or it would have sunk years ago. I still have all mine in my shed from about 1979 - 1995 ish............sad old git. Let's hope someone pull it out of the fire..........................."RUPERT"
