Worth reading that again, Frank Norman(in a cafe up west) Had a missive
from an old firm member about all this malarky,so I thought I'd throw me
three penneth in.For starters the Beatles did give mucho credit to Berry
Gordy's labels and his artists.By covering 3 Motown tunes on their early
albums they also put more that a few quid in Berry's sky rocket. In fact
it was partly due to pressure from the scousers (and the poof manager)that
their record company EMI,gave Motown its own identity and seperate label,as
Dave Godin had often asked for, under the collective name of Tamla Motown. However
we was never that partial to 'em,at least not until Billy Preston joined
the band .By the time the Beatles reached their peak, around "Revolver" we
was all slingin' the Scooters and Tonics out the window. If you wanted a
decent looking sort, you needed a motor and to grow the Barnet. Most of the
old mods went a bit hippy,All Pink Floyd and poncifide. A load of the tickets
joined the skins, and we was left with states who bought all their gear at
Brent and Collins and had never been to Bilgori or John Stephan.Thank God
the Essex herberts got into soul and jazz, eh? Then years later we have
to suffer Paolo,Pillar & "born again" Weller diggin' through the bottom
of our wardrobes and the remnents of our youth to re-claim it all!!What
a Fucking Liberty!!!!! Merton Parkers!!!!! do me a favour, like the ice cream
freezer said "a well below average white band" Now about all this "house"
nonsense.......buy one in Essex,do it up ,then get planning permission for
a two-bed in the garden, knock it up,flog 'em both off and move to Kent!!
SIMPLE AS THAT!! Did any of you see that prog on BBC3 monday night? They
mentioned GAH loads of times.

Ah ha I see the big debate is fast flowing. Well now, I have a very privileged
position with regard to "The Rolling Stones" seeing as my wife is related
to one of them. Now I HAVE personally chatted to Mick, Charlie & Ronnie and
I can tell you without a doubt where there music comes from. I've had conversations
with the three of them, Mick loved Motown/Stax/Blues, Charlie was/is Jazz
and Ronnie is Blues/Motown/Southern Soul. And a previous poster was spot on
saying that without "The Stones" most of SOUL music as we know it today would
not I'm sure had the commercial success it has had so far around the world.
I for one have learned to appreciate "The Stones" from the 'inside' as it
were and there knowledge of Black music in general is astounding. These GUYS
genuinely love our music and should be applauded and revered for what , in
my opinion, they have done for Black music both here in the UK and around
the world.

Probably a mixture of Motown & obvious 60ts Soul We were just getting out
of that Mod band faze although i still liked watching bands live. I'd take
a pinch of salt with what Piller says too be honest. But yeah Randy was a
top fella. I sort of moved away from that strict you have to listen to this
if your a Mod lark. You can't live in the past & i firmly believe the what
i listen to know is a direct descendant to what real Mods listened to in the
60's. I just can't stick the Beatles though..
Markthecabbie

Any Stones v Beatles argument has to take into account the fact that the Beatles
paved the way for bands to write their own material.I think Lennon and McCartney
wrote the Stones second single for instance. And without their example,Loog
Oldham would maybe not have locked them in the room with orders to come up
with some of their own material. Personally,I like 'em both. Not a cop out,I
really do. Also Tony, can you remember what the playlist would have been at
the alldayer.Would it have been the revival bands or the original 60's tunes?Missed
both scenes unfortunately, too young to be an original mod like Bob,but too
old to be on the 79 revival thing. Was really interested to read Eddie P talk

one of the only ways to hear black music live in SE of the UK was to hear
white bands playing Black Music . To say these bands ripped off black artists
is complete ignorance. That, by the way, is from from my point of view as
that is where I grew up and went to clubs in London and the home Counties
such as Whisky A Go Go, Flamingo, Station Hotel Whealdstone, Klooks Kleek,
and The Crawdaddy to name but a few. and don't tell me I don't know as I was

I see you all know fck all about music still.. Was it no the Stones who introduced
white miffle America when the brought Howling Wolf onto the Dick Clark show.
The difference between them & the Beatles is that the Stones paid homage to
where the music came from. They were part of that Eel Pie island scene with
Mose Alison Rod Stewert Long John Baldrey etc.. Read your history before you
speak.. As for House being non original.. Get real you've not got a clue.

they made no bones about it and did it well to a wider white crowd.Marky plenty
of scooter boys around here, but there is a differance, scooter boys wear the
combat type gear and rip their bikes to shreads while the mods get suited
and booted and have their bikes in the classic mod style. We had a great night
with Bigger at the Mission last night, only spoiled by the dopey know it all
manager who took me off the decks for playing RnB (at an RnB night ),his reason

Funny one should talk of 'The Cold North Sea'.
Just back from a MAMMOTH day out @ Southend's Cliff's Pavillion (what a setting),
for the celebration of Mick & Yvette Denny's wedding.
Through the wonderful Phil Levine, I got this gig a few months ago, and BWOY
was I nervous before-hand; you know the sort of thing where one has to bring
their rig many miles away and one hopes that things go to plan, and that one
hasn't forgotten anything important to bring with them
...I needen't have been, it fired up as big as brass (thanks to Ash for the
loan of an additional bass bin), there were such open-minded peeps abound
Played from 6pm 'till 1am and I've never been to a wedding like it
Wall to Wall Soul/Boogie/Northern/Ska/Disco/Y2k+ Modern/Jazz Funk/Jazz Dance/2Step
etc. ..I was in Heaven. Had The Wind Down Zone Vol 5 for the journey home;
be honest here, I had tears running down my face as I drove back in the pouring
rain, listening to Maze's 'We Are One', over 'n over again; turned up REALLY
loud in the Boogie Bus.
It's true you know whatever disagreements we have, it all boils down to the
same thing, we're in it coz we can't live without it ..glorious SOUL music
and all it's relatives

in my humble opinion Craig Douglas version of Only Sixteen(Sam Cooke) is Great

in the '60s and '70s, plus touches of ethnic music and easy listening kitsch,
reminiscent of Japan's Pizzicato Five. Part of the loose-knit Fez collective
of artsy acid jazz revivalists centered in the Italian town of Bari, Conte
was a classically trained musician who instead moved into production and DJing,
working with artists like the Paolo Achenza Trio, the Fez Combo, Balanco,
Quintetto X, and the Intensive Jazz Sextet. Conte also masterminded the Schema
label, which gave many of those artists a home and cultivated a trademark,
distinctly Italian approach to acid jazz. As for his own recording career,
Conte scored an underground hit with his first single, Bossa Per Due, which
appeared on a variety of compilations and was licensed in the U.S. for an
Acura commercial. As for his own recording career, Conte scored an underground
hit with his first single, "Bossa Per Due,". Conte's first album to be released
in America was also titled Bossa Per Due, a slightly reconfigured version
of the Italian Jet Sounds; it appeared on Thievery Corporation's ESL (Eighteenth
Street Lounge) label in the summer of 2001. The remix album Jet Sounds Revisited
followed in late 2002. Conte's latest album, Other Directions, is out now.

SNOWBOY & THE LATIN SECTION Live at the Jazz Cafe Saturday 28th July doors
7pm £15 advance Snowboy - UK's premier Latin Percussionist and leader of Europe’s
hardest working Latin / jazz group - makes a welcome return to the Jazz Cafe.
A cornerstone of the British and European Latin jazz scene for over fifteen
years, Snowboy is generally considered to be one the finest congueros (conga
players) this side of the Atlantic, as well as being a world-renowned jazz-dance
DJ. His live act is a powerful band called The Latin Section with which he
has recorded nine albums, and toured the world. Unlike many of today's overly
polished or bland Latin jazz acts Snowboy’s sound is full-blooded, insistent
and, above all, entertaining. The band’s show provides a non-stop romp through
hard-hitting descargas, savory cha cha chas, and catchy mambos, reminiscent
of the early works of Eddie and Charlie Palmieri. Jazz Cafe 5 Parkway Camden
Town London NW1 7PG Opening Times Monday - Sunday: 7pm - 2am

'when i go to these nights i like a variety a bit of soul Nu/classic/house
and some jazz !'.A quote taken from postings last night sounds like the perfect
evening but unfortunatly does'nt work, having promoted a event like said posting, when
one jock finishes his slot say 1hr playing soul, next up plays dance jazz for
example the soul punter comes straight up what's this we did'nt pay our money
to listen to this. This carries on thru the evening with each changeover,Hence
now more venues are promoting more than one room to give choice to the punters
and also giving jocks chance to play their preferred choices instead of the
incessant requests for the dreaded anthems.I prefer the choide of varied styles
but do the 50-150 Bob mentioned I doubt it what do you think????????

I Just like the odd tune or two
G.A.H.
at 21:20:23 Tuesday July 24 2007
It's nothing to do with being "upfront" Bob.. Yeah i get lots of stuff. Some
i play only once.. But that's Radio.. What i play in a club is entirely different. On
radio i'm showcasing new material that's why i'm sent it & i still play 50%
old tracks anyway. I'm judging them for just d/l a track & not having any
particular feel or understanding for it but because there's a buzz on it.
Take Mark Grant.. I've been buying Mark Grant rmxs & productions for 15yrs.
Now all of a sudden he's got a big tune & too be honest he's done far better
than Guessin again.. And Blaze "oh the new Blaze what a great tune" is it
bollox it's cack & so is the new Blaze/Beyonce collaboration is just awful.
Yet oh Blaze brilliant cos they don't have any History of feeling for House
music. As for gigs like that you couldn't have that now times have changed
the punetrs are just not there & the kids have their own heroes. So when was
the last decnet Housr night you went to Aja?
Aja at 21:9:50
Tuesday July 24 2007
I used to love Nicky Holloways Swan sugar & loaf ,they had the perfect balance
of music ! pure class
So sadly missing from a lot of the scene these days
Bob Masters
at 20:57:50 Tuesday July 24 2007
You see G.A.H., Aja'a kind of gig is my kind of gig and the kind of gig we
used to run, Bob Jones followed by Nicky Holloway followed by Giles followed
by Norman etc etc. I find it hard to follow everything and be right on the
money with what's new today and everyday. I seach as much as I can and quite
often miss, or get on-board a track quite late. I think it's impossible to
be as upfront as you and I feel lot's of people feel that way too, and as
there's so much product, people are not sure where to look. I alway's read
your playlist's to see what's about as well as many other sites including
Traxsource. The amount of CD'r's you get you obviously have a lot of contacts
but it is very unfair to judge others for not being as "on it" as some.

G.A.H.

It's just music by number vocal tracks.. I guarantee i can pull 20 or so 12"s
out of my records at random that 99% of the punters or Dj's have never heard
from 8yrs or so ago.. Because the Dj's have no idea about building a set how
to move a crowd or how to change tempo. Or even how to spot a tune. If it's
not Blaze or Spen or now Mark Grant they're lost.. & to be honest the new
Blaze tunes are so dire it's untrue but cos it's Blaze it's deemed as a must
have. As for putting a great gig together the punters are just not there anymore.
Nobody cares about the music it's full of wannabee dj's with no History.

To say there shit anyway is a bit harsh as it all a case of one-mans-meat
etc, I do know what you mean though. I think that's why there seems to be
loads of "soul gig's" all hitting a peak of anything between 50 - 150 people
at each, but never anymore. I put this down to the "Music by Numbers " dj's
who mostly seem to just be punters with records who play what they think people
want but never have a clue about how the record their playing ever got to
be the track it's become. I really do think the time is upon us where someone
will come along, put a gig together that put's all the ingredients of old
and new and the right blend of dj's, and pull the plug on some of these also-rans.

Aja in Suffolk
at 20:20:16 Tuesday July 24 2007
I have to agree with Bob,i dont go out to many gigs these days simply because
most of the Dj's are very blinkered and yes to many Fine Dj's are stuck to
firmly in the past, and i am sorry but there is some brilliant new soul even
some of the soulfull house deserves a play or two
G.A.H.

Just my opinion but if dj's at soul gig's never step outside the box their
punters ar
